When BlackMilk launched an entire Batman collection, I just about lost it. Two of the things I love most coming together! The collection ranges from being over-the-top-in-your-face Batman themed to being kinda-sorta Batman inspired. Regardless, I love it! I'd gladly wear even the craziest pieces of the collection (a Batman one-piece with an attached cape? Oh yeah I would). But I have to say, my favourite piece from the entire collection is this Batman skater dress. It walks that line of being geeky but subtle enough to be wearable. It's pretty much the definition of chic geek. It's cute, it's versatile and most importantly, IT'S BATMAN! This dress is just about the best thing ever, and it doesn't take the world's greatest detective to figure that one out.
Batman is my absolute favourite. He's my favourite superhero. He's my favourite fictional character. I grew up loving Batman, my dad had the really old comics and I'd spend all my time flipping through them. Despite Gotham City constantly being threatened by one villain or another, I still really wished I lived there. I pretty much grew up with Batman as a constant stable fixture in my life. I have Batman everything (mugs, jewelry, shoes, clothing, slippers, you name it).To my friends I'm the obsessed geeky Batman-freak. Anytime they see Batman anything it automatically gets linked and posted somewhere with me tagged in it (as if I hadn't seen it already...) Don't get me wrong, I'm a big supporter of all things geek when it comes to fashion choices. But I've seen an alarming increase in people wearing superhero tees in a not so super way. I blame The Big Bang Theory (looking at you, Sheldon Cooper) for bringing this look to the mainstream. The beauty of t-shirts like these ones from StylinOnline is that you actually can pair them with a LOT of different pieces to create entirely different looks. Unfortunately I keep seeing the same one. Pairing your fave superhero tee with those same boring everyday jeans just doesn't do your hero justice. Don't just wear your adorable tees, rock them. Try it tucked into a cute skirt, or of course you can still opt for jeans but add some polish to the look with a blazer. After all, you're not just any kind of geek, you're a chic geek. Try the look below, or check out the alternate look on Instagram @instachicgeek. Twitch plays Pokemon exploded across the internet, reviving some interest in the classic game. Now, more people on Facebook claim to be part of the church of the Helix Fossil than Judaism. Watching the chaos ensue as over 50,000 people simultaneously play the same game, Pokemon Red, reminded me how fun Pokemon actually was. And I'm sure many of you feel the same way. After this little experiment, everyone who was old enough to remember the origins of Pokemon was talking about the original 151. I was thrown back into the game I loved when I was younger, and I was instantly inspired. Nothing is more chic than perfect outfit timing. And right now Pokemon is on the up, so hop on this trend with this adorable bodycon skirt from SkinnyBitch Apparel. To balance out the very fitted skirt I prefer to add some volume on the top half of the outfit (It's super effective!). Try a loose-fitting knit sweater for colder days or even a boxy tee or shirt for warmer weather. The skirt itself is already busy, so keep the rest simple. And in case you haven't already noticed I'm a big fan of colour, so bright statement necklace, I choose you! You can make the accessories loud or subtle as you like, add your own personality. Once you've got this outfit mastered, you're off to earn your badges. See you in Fuschia City. So I finally got a chance to see the Lego movie, and I loved it. Judge away, I still think it's perfectly acceptable to be in to Lego even if you're above the age of 8. Also, I happen to be an avid supporter of anything that has Morgan Freeman in it. I'm also a big supporter of wearing your geeky fandom openly and proudly. It's to be expected then that I would be that one eccentric friend who would wear a Lego themed summer dress like this to a BBQ or out with friends. Trust me, I'd find an excuse to wear this dress from SweetHeartClothing (Again, from Etsy). Any excuse will do. Not unrelated, the entire Lego movie (in case you have yet to see it) is all about being unique and yourself and all that wonderful feel good stuff. So embody the movie and make this outfit your own. To keep it casual I'd wear it with cute flats in a pretty hue to break up the blue of the dress. Maybe add slouchy bag. There's so many options really. You'll be putting pieces together like a master builder, and this dress is your building block. Flaunt your own personality and I guarantee the results will be AWESOME! Saturday mornings and Super Mario went together like peanut butter and jelly when I was a kid. If you had one without the other, it just didn't seem right. Even though I was always the Luigi to my big brother's Mario, I never complained. Why would I? This was what I looked forward to all week. And I know a lot of people who feel the same way. Super Mario was and still is a classic game, recognized everywhere. That's why I adore this cardigan from Etsy seller FantastiquePlastique (In case you haven't noticed the trend yet, Etsy is a geek's best friend). The cute playful look of this cardigan nails the entire spirit of the Super Mario series, and it's infinitely more stylish than anything our favourite Italian plumber has worn so far. While it may be a casual piece, it has the potential to be dressed up if styled correctly because the details are small and subtle enough. So go ahead and power-up your wardrobe with this fun Mario inspired cardigan. Throw on some colourful cigarette pants and a scarf to add some extra life to the whole outfit. Most importantly, feel invincible and blast through anything that gets in your way. Anime is generally the most geeky of geeky interests. I don't know why but even my most hardcore geek friends have a hard time admitting to the world that they like anime. Personally I've phased in and out of it. But I'll never forget what got me started on it. I was seven years old when Sailor Moon reached Canadian television and I was instantly hooked. I actually found an episode on the air recently and tried watching it. That's when I realized seven year old me didn't have the greatest judgement, this show was actually awful. But out of sheer nostalgia Sailor Moon will always have a special place in my heart. Maybe because in retrospect it has that appeal of being so bad its good. With the 20th anniversary reboot series confirmed and approaching, I found myself talking about it just the other day with a friend and I knew the next outfit I would post had to be a tribute to Sailor Moon. So today I'd like to present you all with the Sailor Moon crop top from Etsy seller WhatTheShirts. If you were anything like me, you'll have fun letting your inner moon princess shine through. To make this look really stellar, pair with high-waisted jeans. Low-rise jeans with a crop top can sometimes be a bit much. This is just enough to catch the attention of your own rose-throwing formally dressed mystery man and comfy enough that you can save the Moon kingdom. Dark kingdom beware. I can NOT stop thinking about summer. Seriously, I'm so ready for winter to be over. I've already started going through my summer clothes just to evaluate how badly I need to go shopping. While I was doing that I remembered my favourite summer outfit of all time. My fabulous and super-stylish cousin could rock a one-piece like nobody's business. She would wear it with shorts or skirts and made it the coolest outfit ever. Ever since then, I've been obsessed with pulling off a similar look. That's where the inspiration for this fun summer look came from. Of course an outfit is only half-complete without a bit of geek. So as my awesome one-piece I chose the Artoo swimsuit from BlackMilk, making this look a little more cute, sweet and casual than my cousin's fierce out-on-the-town look. Artoo needs the sunshine of this cute little bag after spending winter in what feels like Hoth. A skater skirt adds a bit of volume, a few pretty finishing touches and its as if you used the force to pull this ensemble together. Like magic, a one-piece swimsuit becomes an acceptable replacement for a tank top and works for casual everyday wear. So whether you're off to a galaxy far far away, or maybe just to a bbq, this outfit will get you there in style. I am obsessed with Game of Thrones. So obsessed in fact that "what would you take to Westeros, a sword or a map?" became an actual subject for debate (This is actually still up for debate but I still say a sword, everyone's trying to kill everyone in Westeros). Even though Jon Snow knows "different roads can lead to the same castle", a map would still be really helpful in a war-torn and treacherous land (I know its a fictional place, I'm just very enthusiastic). Wear these leggings and eliminate the need for a map, so you can carry that much needed sword instead. The Westeros leggings from Poprageous are designed for the maiden fair, but won't leave you feeling restricted should you find yourself on the battlefield or running from...well...everyone. Retreat to The Wall with this look. Take the black, add some fur and you are ready to join the Night's Watch. |
Rochelle BInstead of fairy tales, my dad read me Batman comics as a kid. My mom preferred to dress me up as a princess. This chic-geek combo is the result. Archives
