While I was there I received an incredible little bit of advice. One that actually lead to the highlight of the city for me. As soon as we landed and started running to our first appointment my boss made a point of saying "Whenever you're in New York City, make sure to take a second to look up". Sounds like a really random thing but she was 100% right. It's not until you're taking in the full panorama, that skyline of Manhattan, the gigantic towers, the flags proudly blowing in the wind, the bustle of the people, the breathtaking window displays and the brilliant lights that you really get a feel for the city and what it is. It's a living, breathing entity. New York, while like Toronto in many ways, has a pulse and a heart beat that can kind of make living in this city feel like its flatlined. I love NYC.
It's kind of funny how I was just exiting a store in Manhattan when this advice rang through my head. I decided right then and there to take a second, take a breath, and look up to take it all in. I guess I chose the perfect time to do so. The sight I saw brought an ear to ear grin that stuck with me right through to the end of the night. Not a beautiful window display for a glamorous shop in Times Square, but rather 8 bit decor, made with craft paper to give an apartment building a bit of personality. Regardless of where you're from or how far you've travelled, this was a sign anyone can understand. Dorks welcome. Geekdom is the language that unites us all.
Next time you find yourself in Manhattan, take a second to look up.
